Abigail is beginning to let go of her grief and look toward the future with visiting forensic investigator Bill Avery (Jack Wagner), who hopes she'll open her heart to love again. But as the mine investigation heats up, Gowen (Martin Cummins) realizes he can use their growing bond against them, and threatens Bill to stop his examination of the mine, or Abigail will be hurt. Meanwhile, a hurt and confused Jack confronts Elizabeth about her new job offer back home, and Elizabeth realizes news spreads fast in Coal Valley. With everyone looking to her to decide the fate of the school-while the children worry they'll lose their favorite teacher- Elizabeth ask Jack to think hard about his feelings for his ex-fiancee, Rosemary (Pascale Hutton). Even though Rosemary has charmed everyone with her big personality, Jack urges her to move on, but she doesn't want to give up that easily. The, when disaster survivor Adam Miller (Chad Willet) proposes raising funds to rebuild the church and schoolhouse, Gowen uses his monetary leverage to influence the whole town to turn on Abigail, Bill and the costly investigation and the upcoming trial-and shockingly proclaims Abigail's late husband is who to really blame. Abigail stands her ground, but is devastated when two of Gowen's hired men attack Bill and steal the evidence he has collected. Abigail clings to teh hope that the new visiting Circuit Judge, Jedidiah Black (James Brolin) a legendary man insolent, insufferable and incorruptible will finally bring justice, just as Elizabeth and Jack take an important step in their relationship. As tensions in town build, Elizabeth, Jack and Rosemary all make a final choice about their futures, and Abigail discovers the greatest betrayal yet might come from the last person she ever expected. As Elizabeth deals with her conflicted emotions about Jack while helping a new student realize his potential, she gets news from home that makes her doubt she should stay in Coal Valley at all.
